This trick is only for reinstalling Windows XP on the exact same computer after formatting the hard drive. The OP is installing a new motherboard.

Can't get to my second hard drive now
I Used Partition Magic 8.0 to try installing a 2nd OS (XPx64) on a newly created partition. First partition is 110 GBs my new partition is 30 GBs. Hard-drive 160 GBs. I follow the printed directions & I boot to new partition, it tells me its the wrong disk but when I press any key to boot from CD, all starts well.

Vista now needs CD to boot after installing XP on slave--suggestio
Install it internally with a standard 100Mb EIDE or with a faster SATA interface. Install the game of your choice on that drive and play it. If the hard drive is slower, it doesn't matter how fast the interface is. If the interface can't use 100% of its potential bandwidth then it may limit access speed.) No.

Dual booting Vista Ultimate 64 bit with XP Pro
I now have managed to get the choice to load either Vista or XP, but only after hitting escape to enter my bios menu and choosing the Vista hard drive to boot dvd you will get variation of the drive lettering (no real problem) and will have the boot menu after you install Vista on the second drive or partition.

Cant install vista to sata drive
That would be information on what exactly XP changes in its use of HPA and other changes to the hard drive. I'm beginning to suspect this may be a possible reason for Vista not having a new file system as it was supposed to (or at least that's what I have heard or read). -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com/

Vista (Dual Boot)
In order for Time Machine to work, you need a second hard drive or partition to back up to; without this, Time Machine will not work. In other words, Time Machine does not allow you to go back to previous revisions of files if you do not own a second (external) hard drive. Vista, on the other hand, has something

I have added a second hard drive (G drive), and that 's where I want to put Vista. I can't get to the recovery console (it won't install since I have XPSP2) so I can't FIXMBR (don't care\need the Linux stuff anymore). Mike The "extra harddrive" approach <clipped> I didn't think about using that with my XPS 410 desktop but now that you mention it, my recent 250G second hard drive only cost $69, so what worked with my laptop should work with my desktop too. Glad I caught this post. In case anyone reading this is interested in the

Vista: 5 Months Later
The boot files on the second hard drive, by the way, was due to the BIOS, apparently. As no new BIOS updates were available fro my machine (which is 2 years old) the above scenario was the only solution. I originally dual booted and all i wanted to do was wipe the drive and install Vista on drive 0.

Dual booting XP Pro 32 bit with Vista 64 bit?
1) re-format your hard drive. (To do this you need to be booted off the OS X system disk or a second hard drive) OK, so WHY can'tI use the XP installation disk to reformat my HD? I would really love to be able to remove OS X from my Apple Intel PC and install XP (or Vista RC1) fresh on a totally zeroed-out HD.

Installed Vista dual boot, think I screwed up!
Installing XP on a second hard drive has clobbered Vista on the primary drive. I do not have my Vista DVD with me and am wondering the easiest way to recover Vista ? I obviously have a XP CD with me, and am hoping that I can get away with out having to redownload a Vista ISO from MSDN Subscriptions.

install Vista PR1 and be able to boot to XP
Have you changed the "slave" setting on the old hard drive to "master"? "you now have to reboot with original boot disk, which you no longer have"? So I put this drive into the 2nd pc as MASTER (see this Mick) and attempt to install Vista. I get past the "loading software" and then the "windows" progess bar

Hi, My son installed Vista as a dual boot system with XP on a second hard drive of his PC. After the install, the PC would only boot into Vista and not into XP, so he (perhaps rashly) reformatted the Vista drive in order to remove it from his system. Now the PC won't boot at all from the hard drive.

So when you install xp after vista, the key point is to restore the boot sector. If you don't, you can write all the MBRs you want, they won't fix your problem. No one has said that only the MBR The MBR is like a "global bootsector" that tells the BIOS where in the hard-drive it should look for a bootloader.
